Violinist Katherine Liccardo, a native New Yorker, began her violin and piano studies at age 3. Katherine’s passion for music started at home, growing up in a household of music teachers and performers. At the age of 18, she made her Carnegie Hall Stern Auditorium solo debut as the winner of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. Katherine received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Mannes College The New School for Music and is currently pursuing her Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Laurie Smukler. She has served as concertmaster at both of these prestigious institutions.
During her last year at Mannes, Katherine was a founding member and first violinist of NEXTquartet. The quartet made regular appearances in the Mannes Festival Concert Series performing at venues around New York such as The Museum of the City of New York, Christie’s Auction House, and the Center for Jewish History. The quartet had the pleasure of working and performing with pianist and composer Lowell Liebermann on his Piano Quintet. NEXTquartet also collaborated with Parsons School of Design and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on conductor Marin Alsop’s project to create new orchestral garments for the modern orchestral player.
Katherine is a member of the Liccardo Duo, a brother-sister sonata team that is active in the New York area.
The Duo has played recitals at Mannes College, Manhattan School of Music, Queens College, The School for Strings, among others. This past January, they presented a series of concerts entitled “Viennese Sonatas and Fantasies,” which traced the formal and stylistic evolution from the First to the Second Viennese Schools.
A passionate pedagogue, Katherine holds teaching positions at the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College and the Saint David’s School. She is a graduate of the long term Suzuki training in books 1-8 at The School for Strings, studying with Ecaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb and of the Hartt School of Music Summer Suzuki Book 1 training under the tutelage of Carrie Reuning-Hummel.
Katherine has participated in many prestigious summer festivals as a student and faculty member. She has studied at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Manchester Music Festival, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. As a violin teacher, chamber music coach, and orchestral coach, Katherine has taught at the Elisabeth Morrow School Summer String Festival and Summer Arts Week in New Jersey as well as the Berkshire Summer Music Strings and Piano Festival in Massachusetts.
